In
recent years, increased attention has focused on the recognition
and treatment of anxiety disorders. These syndromes include
generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder,
posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, obsessive
compulsive disorder, and specific phobias. The impact
of anxiety disorders is enormous in terms of loss of human
societal contributions, financial costs, and lost quality
of life. A thorough understanding of these syndromes involves
a review of their possible origin and etiology, including
early childhood events and possible genetic and neurobiological
influences.
Theories as to the sources of anxiety disorders and the
neurochemical and neuroanatomical bases of anxiety disorders
will be discussed. The treatment of anxiety disorders
focuses on modulating underlying neurochemical disturbances,
either through psycho- or pharmacological therapies. Combinations
of psychotherapy and the use of different drug classes
and drug combinations, tailored to specific anxiety disorders,
will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on new and
emerging therapies.
